Next we traveled deep into the "Heart of Borneo" to the Danum Valley Conservation Area for a two night stay within the tallest and the most ancient virgin rainforest on the planet. Tourism is limited in Danum Valley, so the only accommodations are at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Despite being in the middle of the remote jungle, the lodge is quite luxurious, and was the highlight of our honeymoon. Each day, we woke before sunrise to the haunting calls of Bornean gibbons, and took morning hikes to spot some of the stunning rainforest biodiversity. We walked atop the forest canopy on suspended walkways, hiked mountaintop viewpoint trails, and went on nocturnal safari drives, and observed everything from acrobatic gibbons and curious orangutans to bearded pigs, mouse deer, flying lizards, and giant squirrels—with scores of colorful birds and butterflies along the way.
